Empowering Country Living:

Harnessing Solar PV and Battery Technology for Sustainable Residence
Overview:

Our recent project involved the installation of a comprehensive solar PV (photovoltaic) and battery system for a detached country residential property located in Bride. The system was meticulously designed to meet the specific energy needs of the homeowner and to provide maximum  savings while providing resilience against grid power outages.

Initial Process:

The first step involved conducting a comprehensive survey of the property to determine the optimal placement for installing the solar panels. It was decided to utilize a stable outbuilding for this purpose, as well as to position the inverter and batteries. Additionally, a structural assessment of the proposed roof was carried out.

Furthermore, gathering data on the client’s electricity usage involved analyzing their consumption over the past 12 months via electricity bills, supplemented by discussions on their anticipated future needs.

Following the initial survey, we utilized advanced solar PV system design software to explore various configurations of solar setups and battery capacities. This software empowers us to evaluate a broad spectrum of solar panels, inverters, and batteries sourced from diverse manufacturers. Moreover, it enables the creation of a detailed 3D model of the property, incorporating any potential shading obstacles that might impact solar efficiency at different times of the day and throughout the year.

By integrating data on anticipated energy consumption, including considerations such as peak and off-peak tariff rates, as well as the reimbursement rates set by Manx Utilities for surplus energy fed back into the grid, we ensured a comprehensive analysis.

This meticulous process enabled us to tailor the optimal system precisely aligned with the client’s energy requirements.

In our final proposal to the client, we furnished a comprehensive breakdown of equipment specifications and associated costs, coupled with projected system performance metrics. Crucially, we provided an estimation of the annual savings and the expected timeframe for return on investment, thereby delivering a clear picture of the financial benefits of the proposed solution.

Key Components:
32 Solar Panels - 13.9kW Combined Maximum Generating Capacity

A robust array of solar panels, with a maximum generating capacity of 13.9kW and consisting of two arrays of 16 panels each on two sides of the roof, was installed to harness the ample sunlight and convert it into clean, renewable energy.

10kW Three-Phase Inverter

An advanced high-capacity inverter has been integrated to seamlessly convert the DC power produced by the solar panels into AC Three-Phase power, optimizing it for household usage. It’s worth noting that it’s a standard practice to slightly oversize the solar array relative to the inverter capacity. This deliberate oversizing enhances the system’s efficiency, especially during periods of reduced sunlight availability.

19.4kWh Battery Storage

The inclusion of a substantial but appropriately sized battery storage system ensures energy resilience and allows for the optimization of self-consumption without compromising cost-effectivenes.

Backup Power Capability

In the event of a grid power supply outage, the system seamlessly switches to backup power mode, providing electricity to critical circuits within the property.

Customized Energy Management

The system is intelligently designed to accommodate the property’s higher-than-average electricity demand, driven by a ground source heat pump and electric vehicle charging.

Grid Charging Capability

Leveraging a favourable off-peak electricity tariff, the homeowner can recharge the batteries from the grid during off-peak hours, optimizing cost savings and energy utilization

Cloud Monitoring Platform

Full remote monitoring through the App or web browser allows real-time visualization of the installation, as well as configuration of the inverter.

Benefits:
Energy Independence

By harnessing solar energy and integrating battery storage, the homeowner gains greater autonomy over their energy consumption, reducing reliance on the grid.

Cost Savings

The system’s ability to charge batteries during off-peak hours helps mitigate electricity costs, maximizing savings over time.

Environmental Sustainability

By transitioning to clean, renewable energy sources, the project contributes to reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental stewardship.

Backup Power Capability

In the event of a grid power supply outage, the system seamlessly switches to backup power mode, providing electricity to critical circuits within the property.

Resilience

The inclusion of backup power capability ensures uninterrupted electricity supply, enhancing the property’s resilience to grid disruptions and emergencies. This is important for the client as they often work from home.

Commsioning & Handover:

Tests were conducted on the solar PV array to ensure it was working correctly and efficiently. The entire system underwent comprehensive testing and commissioning, adhering to all electrical regulations and guidelines. Furthermore, it was ensured that the system met the requirements of G98-type approval, allowing its connection onto the Manx Utilities electricity supply network.

Upon completion, the requisite test certificates and G98 application were promptly submitted to Manx Utilities on behalf of the client. Additionally, a comprehensive handover pack was furnished to the client. This package included equipment manuals, duplicates of the test certificates, and a detailed system schematic illustrating the system layout.

Conclusion:

The solar PV and battery installation project for the detached country residential property in Bride exemplifies our commitment to delivering tailored, sustainable energy solutions that empower homeowners to embrace renewable energy, reduce costs, and enhance energy resilience. Through meticulous design, expert installation, and ongoing support, we have helped our client achieve greater energy efficiency and peace of mind for years to come.
